How to make your home a little more Scandi

Bring some of that Scandi style into your homes.

15th August 2023

With a wet and windy Copenhagen fashion week just behind us, complete with a fresh set of buzzy new designers and forever inspirational street style, it’s got us inspired to bring some of that Scandi style into our homes. Luckily, introducing this aesthetic into your space needn’t involve lots of money and copious amounts of time – in fact, a few simple tweaks are all it takes. You’ll find the Scandinavian design principles clean and inviting but with plenty of interest that can help make your space feel totally unique.

Experiment with glassware

Though minimalism often lies at the core of traditional Scandi style, modern interpretations feel slightly more eclectic in both fashion and home. To introduce some dopamine-inducing moments without taking over your entire home, we recommend experimenting with glassware. Glasses, jugs and even vases and mugs in interesting designs and colourways all fall into this category and help to give your home a trending boost without too much effort. You’ll find independent boutiques the best place to look for this sort of thing, especially if you’re after something it’s unlikely your neighbours will have too.

Introduce soft furnishings

If you haven’t heard of the interior buzzword Hygge in recent years, it’s defined as a quality of cosiness and comfort and known as a defining characteristic of Danish culture. When it comes to interiors, it comes into play by creating intimacy in the home by way of a relaxing and calm aesthetic. To some, Hygge is totally encapsulated by being bundled up in blankets on a sofa with a good book and hot chocolate in tow. Capturing this energy is made simple by way of plenty of soft furnishings; blankets, cushions, rugs are all important here and can help give an otherwise clinical-feeling home some much needed-warmth.

Incorporate natural fibres

Your walls, floors and ceiling can make a big impact when it comes to having the right textures in your home – but if you’re not considering an entire redecoration in the interest of Hygge, bringing in textures through smaller décor moments like rattan placemats, linen curtains or even floral displays help to bring the feel of nature indoors achieving an organic and informal feel.

Remember, lighting is key

The key to setting the mood in any home is often in the lighting, and though your home may benefit from plenty of natural light in the daytime, the evening is where you can begin to set your bespoke tone. Both candles and lamps are interior favourites of the Danes and help to bring both an interesting aesthetic and some welcome warmth to your living area. Candle scents and styles are usually personal but note that more interesting shapes and colours are all the rage right now. We recommend lighting them a little earlier in the day than usual, so you experience that cosy feeling for longer.

Display your treasures

A home never quite feels like one until it has a healthy dose of you in it. By ensuring those personal items you cherish and display your personality stay at the forefront of your interiors plan, you’ll find making your home feel welcoming complete with plenty of soul is easier than ever. Prints, books and plenty of photo frames filled with your loved ones can help achieve this effect.
