Balfour Place, originally known as Portugal Street, was established in 1730 and became home to several prominent residents over the centuries. The area was initially occupied by stables and mediumsized houses. By the late 19th century, the Duke of Westminster initiated a redevelopment program, leading to the renaming of the street in 1891 after Eustace Balfour, the Grosvenor Estate’s surveyor.

The construction of No. 1 Balfour Place, designed by Eustace Balfour and H. Thackeray Turner, was completed in 1893 using red Suffolk brick and Portland stone. Notable early residents included
George William Coventry, the 9th Earl of oventry, and later, Sir Jeremiah Colman, the “Mustard King.” Following Sir Colman’s death in 1942, the building transitioned to commercial use, housing various businesses throughout the mid-20th century. In the early 1990s, the property was restored and converted back into a private residence, where it remains under the ownership of the same family today. Balfour House, formally 1 Balfour Place, underwent extensive refurbishment in 2017 when a planning
application was made for the addition of a large roof terrace and a change of name. The house is considered one of the finest homes in Mayfair as it is the only double fronted south facing home in the Mayfair Village. As a one way street, this section of Aldford Street is extremely quiet with no access into the street from Park Lane or South Audley Street.Just 0.6 miles from Green Park station and 0.5 miles to Hyde Park corner, it is extremely well connected to local transport links.
